Lynk Solutec, a South Korean medical device company, announced that its coating material was used in a study led by a Yonsei University research team, published in the international journal Small.
The paper, “Gas-Specific and Tunable Hydrogen-Selective ZIF Membrane through Combined Physical Confinement and Sealing Techniques” (Choi E. et al., Small, 21(34), 2501590), was published on July 1, 2025, in a journal with an impact factor of 12.1. Lynk Solutec co-CEOs Yeontaek Lee and Jungmok Seo are listed among the paper’s authors, having contributed under their academic affiliation with Yonsei University.
To address non-selective gas leakage through grain boundaries in hydrogen-selective ZIF-8 membranes, the research team developed a sealing method that combines dip-coating a fluorinated polymer onto a graphene-nanoribbon-hybridized ZIF-8 membrane with reactive ion plasma treatment. The fluorinated coating material used in this sealing process is Lynk Solutec’s hydrophobic coating agent, LYNKCOAT™ S Series, formerly known as Lynksolution A1. Membranes treated with this method achieved a hydrogen permeance of 1.3 × 10⁻⁶ mol m⁻² Pa⁻¹ s⁻¹ and an ideal H₂/N₂ selectivity of 209; the paper does not provide a direct quantitative benchmark against commercial membranes.
“This study, conducted by an external research team, validated that our coating platform can extend beyond medical device surface treatment into industrial applications such as hydrogen purification membranes,” said Yeontaek Lee, CEO of Lynk Solutec. “Over the long term, we will explore diversifying our coating applications into industrial markets.”
This achievement does not translate into immediate revenue; its significance lies in third-party validation of the company’s coating platform technology. Lynk Solutec is reviewing entry into industrial coating markets, including semiconductors and energy, in addition to its existing medical device coating business, and plans to explore further collaboration with research institutions and companies following this academic milestone.
